More than 750,000 people each year use the facilities of the River
Park in the district of Santa Coloma de Gramenet.
The Project for the Recovery of the final section of the Besòs on its way through Santa Coloma has met the three objectives of the initial project:
1. Loss ofr public use an area degraded and without use of the city and turn the edges of the river in an urban park. One of the main proceedings has been the burial of power lines along the River Besòs completed in 2005.
2. Improving the quality of the river Besòs meidante its cleansing and regeneration incorporating areas of moisture in the two bands of the river. Through these plots changes are filtered water from the sewage treatment plant and Montcada Reixac increasing its quality. At that time is running we have seen an increase of biodiversity in this area, primarily species of birds and amphibians.
3. The final goal has been to ensure the safety of people who use the park facilities. A sophisticated control system ensures that safety at all times.
The riverbed Besòs which was the most polluted of catalunya in 70's, and represented a barrier between citizens and the river is now a fleet of 70 hectares on its way through Santa Coloma de Gramenet.
The years 2004, coinciding with the Forum of Cultures, opened its extension to the sea. Of the initial 6 miles of the park has reached 12 miles.
The park river also represents a major change of concept of mobility through the city. The bike path that runs through the park Sant Adrià, Santa Coloma, and Montcada Reixac, also through the park Can Zam allows cross the city in a timely manner, pleasant and without cars.
The Besòs River Park incorporates sustainability criteria in their management.
The recovery and environmental landscape of the Besòs channel has enabled the regeneration of new homes: wetlands, meadows and river has favored the continued presence of bird species that a few years ago did not exist.
The coordinated management of the council of Barcelona takes into consideration the creteria identified by the Environmental Action Plan of Santa Coloma.
