The natural areas of Santa Coloma de Gramenet, there are two major natural atraction:

  • The Sierra Marina
  • The Besòs River

Urban growth occurred in about 60 uncontrolled ways from a core of rural economy, saw its expansion limited by the existence of two natural physical spaces such as the Sierra Marina and the Besòs River. These distinct natural areas, along with spaces or peri-urban areas of contact between the mountains and the city, today represent 28.5% of  the total area of the municipality.

This proximity, which is part of our privileged city, also includes a series of problems tied to a very large population nuclei and have and has experienced significant levels of degradation. The case of the basin Besòs is paradigmatic, for four years it has been one of the most polluted and degraded river basin in Europe.

Regarding the Cordillera Marina as a whole represents a sample of natural areas of the mountains themselves with Mediterranean littoral domain the Encina coastline and alcornoqueda. Currently retains remarkable points of interest such as woodland near the torrent. In 1996 the consortium was established the Marina´s cordillera with the goal of protecting the space. The proximity to a highly densified urban area, makes this ecosystem suffers human pressure in the form of uncontrolled uses of land, generation of fire and loss of diversity.
Each year the creation of fires in the mountains near Santa Coloma is a concern, which requires a major effort around the world and the providing of resources for prevention.
