The generation and waste management in Santa Coloma

Waste Generation and Waste Management in Santa Coloma Collection and management of municipal waste The municipal waste management in Santa Coloma needs to explain that this has been realised following the European rules on waste, the National Urban Waste Plan 2000-2006, the programme of Waste Management Municipal from Catalunya (PROGREMIC) and goals established in Metropolitan Waste Management Programme(* PMGRM).

The PMGRM sets targets for selective collection and provides variable and flexible facilities and waste treatment systems, within a strategy that foresees the prevention and minimization of waste generation and that (in early 2007) levels of recycling of 60% were achieved, in a scenario in which waste generation has been decreasing.

The following charts show the trend regarding the generation of municipal waste and its management in Santa Coloma and their situation within the metropolitan area of Barcelona.

Evolution of the total waste per capita and comparative.

A progressive increase can be observed, although slight, of the amount of waste produced per inhabitant and per day. It must be said however, that the situation of the production of municipal waste in Santa Coloma in the year 2005 was enough favorable, with a production rate of 1.22 Kg waste per inhabitant and day, significantly below the average of the metropolitan area of Barcelona with an output of 1.44 Kg waste per inhabitant and day. This could indicate that the objective of stabilization is being achieved. Compared to median values of the yearly generation of waste per inhabitant this is enough favorable.

The industrial waste

Annual Production of Industrial Waste in Santa Coloma

If we look at the annual production of industrial waste in Santa Coloma, the production of such waste becomes apparently stable over the years.

The levels of recovery of industrial waste in Santa Coloma in recent years have been quite fairly high in percentage with regard to the total waste ranging from 75% in 2001 and 98% in 2000 and with a median value of accumulated 90.1% from 2000 until 2004.

If we compare these values with the data obtained from the Catalan Recycling Centre for Catalonia in the year 2005, we encounter that the levels of Santa Paloma regarding the recovery of industrial waste are considerably above the average of whole Catalonia to the year 2005 which were at a level of 68%.
